Weird neighbor mows homeowner's lawn without permission while they're asleep and destroys the sprinkler system: 'It felt a little too invasive'

  • Neighbor working in a backyard garden while performing outdoor maintenance around the home.
  • At approximately 8:30am this morning, our neighbor rang our doorbell to inform me that she had broken a sprinkler head off from our yard. I answered the Ring, but couldn't really make out what she was saying.
  • She was just standing on the porch kind of rambling into the Ring. I asked her to hold on and went to the door. When I got to the door, she was standing on the porch holding a sprinkler head and explained that she accidentally "busted it off with her lawnmower" while mowing.
  • It took me a quick minute to gather what she was saying, and she displayed some erratic behavior (very jittery, talking very fast).
  • I finally asked her if she was mowing our yard, and she confirmed that she had been outside mowing our yard. We live in a relatively busy downtown neighborhood, so hearing the sound of lawn equipment is something we don't really pay attention to.
  • Plus, I don't work in the summers, and my fiancé works really odd summer hours, so we were barely out of bed. By the time she came to the door, she had already mowed our whole front yard and our side yard, meaning she had been out there for a while.
  • She offered to replace the sprinkler head, but I was a little taken aback by her mowing our yard. I should mention, we don't know this woman or her husband well at all... I told her it was okay, and asked her to leave the sprinkler head on the porch, as I didn't want to open the door and let my dogs out.
  • I apologized for my response and thanked her for mowing, but I know I had to have come off as confused and maybe a little curt.
  • I'd like to mention that we take very good care of our lawn. We obviously have a sprinkler system in place, we pay for TruGreen to come on a monthly basis, and we do routine yard work. I'd argue we have one of the best lawns on the block.
  • There was no need for her to mow our yard, and in the process she damaged our sprinkler head beyond repair. She also returned about an hour later and apologized again, displaying the same erratic behavior and offering to fix the sprinkler head on her own immediately.
  • Lawn mower cutting a residential yard similar to the one at the center of the neighborhood dispute.
  • Since I don't know this woman, I'm not sure if this is "normal" behavior for her or not. They have lived in the neighborhood for about 3 years now. She is usually very standoffish, and she and her husband keep to themselves (as do we).
  • All of the other encounters I've had with her or her husband have been short and not very neighborly... It almost feels like she was under the influence or something, which I don't care about (to each his own). Until you're operating equipment on my property, without my permission, and damaging my property in the process.
  • When she came back to apologize for the second time, we politely asked her not to do it again, as we have a schedule for maintaining our property. She seemed receptive, but I still feel super uncomfortable about the whole thing.
  • We would never take it upon ourselves to do yard maintenance at their home. We often do snow removal on our block, but I feel like this is way different and was a little too invasive. I don't know... Am I the a-h_e???
  • Close-up of hands gardening, highlighting routine yard work on a residential property.
  • _gadget_girl NTA I would not escalate it beyond making it clear that you don't want her mowing your yard without permission again.
  • night_noche You said you do snow removal for your neighborhood, is this then maybe her way of thanking you for that?
  • elcasaurus Nta but I wokls be much more firm about it. "Why were you mowing my lawn? Don't come on my property without my permission. Don't mow my lawn." Crazy entitled people will do all kinds of weird sh. I wouldn't be thanking her for vandalizing your property.
  • kindofanasshole17 NTA for being annoyed/upset by the situation, but what more do you expect her to do? She alerted you to the problem immediately, apologized, offered to fix it repeatedly, and was receptive to your request to not mow your yard again. She made a mistake and is trying to take responsibility and rectify it.
  • DarkStarRb30 Just replace it and communicate to her thanks for the mow, but not to mow their yard again.
  • fadingsunsetglow Odd for sure. Probably would have knocked on the door for compensation when she finished had she not broken your sprinkler.
  • Unusual Sunrise8992 Since you said that you "often do snow removal" on your block, maybe she just wanted to show some kindness forward? It seems she feels bad by even coming back to apologize again.
